On January 24, the Northern Indiana WAND chapter kicked off 2012 with an excellent Membership Month event and State of the Union Watch Party!

David Cortright speaks about his work with Afghan women.

Lois Bare, the chapter treasurer, kindly welcomed 24 participants to her home for the event. Karen Jacob and her husband, David Cortright, shared about their recent trip to Cairo to observe the democratic transition in Egypt. Karen serves as the chapter leader and board chair for WAND Inc. and is married to fellow peace activist, David Cortright, a professor at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Read more about their trip here.

Karen Jacob shares about her recent trip to Cairo, Egypt.

David then spoke about his work supporting Afghan women. He advocates for an inclusive transition plan that enhances security and human rights for women in Afghanistan. With his eloquence and passion, David definitely carried the night!

Several people decided to join WAND or renew their membership at the event. Many stayed after Karen and David’s presentation to watch President Obama’s State of the Union address. Following along with WAND’s very own listening guide for the State of the Union speech, participants learned about our government's budget priorities and national security plans for the year ahead.

Cheers to Northern Indiana WAND for organizing such an educational and empowering event for new and renewing members alike!
